As many of you know, one of my passions is how we got here. From the use of language to science, there is a story, a history, an evolution to what we take for granted today. In research for one of my projects I stumbled across this film, 1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al Haytham. A wonderful short film and tribute to one of the great minds that led the way for what we know today as the scientific method over 1000 years ago. Seriously, Omar Sharif? Forget about it… https://youtu.be/MmPTTFff44k

One of My Favorite Schools of All Time

Every once in a while, you make contact with someone and it is the beginning of something special. In 2007 I received a call to perform at a school in Illinois, Isaac Fox Elementary . In every case, throughout the last 20yrs, whoever is in charge of programming changes hands fairly often. I may attend a school several years in a row and then in the changing of the position my information does not get passed on. I may get a call from a school that I have been to many times before, but the person calling had never even heard of me prior and it was just by chance, they had called. This has not been the case with Isaac Fox Elementary. This year, was the 10 th year in a row that I have been to Isaac Fox without fail. I performed once again (for the 10 th year) to a room full of 100 – 8yr olds! AND, once again, it was an absolutely wonderful experience. In every visit, I have performed to a group of well behaved, playful, charming and inquisitive kids. That is a compliment to both the

Eating a Giant Bowl of LIVE Mealworms!

In honor of the up and coming 3rd annual bug-eating contest at the  Schiele Museum , I decided to post one of my favorite scenes from Tales from the Bug Whisperer.  Big Sigh, sometimes I still can't believe the things I did to make this video.  Enjoy! Why I Will March for Science. #whyimarch

Why I March for Science. [caption id="attachment_1084" align="aligncenter" width="406"] #whyimarch[/caption] “No matter what you look at, if you look at it closely enough, you are involved in the entire universe.” ― Michael Faraday As an entomologist and traveling educator/entertainer, I am not a career scientist. My life’s mission has been to create them! I can’t even say that I am concerned about insects either in any way, other than their value as a tool to excite and inspire. However, in that regard, they are THE greatest tool I know of for just that reason. Entomology is a gateway science! Insects are everywhere and affect everything. Just about any science you can think of can be connected to insects, including astronomy. Children are absolutely fascinated by them and they are as accessible as the outdoors. Just by introducing them to something that accessible, it inspires their curiosity to be pursued on their own terms. Curiosity inspires question

No Bugs, No Glory! 10th Anniversary of: Who Wants to be an Entomologist?

No Bugs, No Glory! 10th Anniversary of -  Who Wants to be an Entomologist? It’s hard for me to believe that 10 years ago this month all the writing, all the filming, all the post production came to an end to produce the DVD - Who Wants to be an Entomologist? It was the first part in a planned series of Tales from the Bug Whisperer .  Looking back on it all leaves me with mixed feelings of pride and anxiety. It was the culmination of 10 years of just trying to make it happen, then it was happening, and then it happened: 10 years ago!  Looking back a blur of memories come to mind:  Memories of both triumphs, failures, betrayals and a great deal of sacrifice and tenacity. So, in that vein, let me start from the beginning: Back in 1995, I had started a traveling live insect exhibit in my last semester of college.  It started as a joke over a couple of beers with friends, where someone blurted out, “I want to talk about bugs and I want to get paid to do it!” Well, the story

Meet the Bug Whisperer

You’ve heard of the Dog Whisperer, the Cat Whisperer, and the Horse Whisperer. Well, now meet the Bug Whisperer. Antonio (“Tony”) Gustin, an entomologist, is an award-winning film producer, educator, and performer. He also started Tony’s Creepy Crawly Zoo, a fun and educational series of programs that teaches kids (and adults) about the world of bugs. My [...] [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25kQ8Nb7zvQ[/embed] Source: Meet the Bug Whisperer
